Food Sovereignty in Nepal
(1st university program of R&S)

Brief Introduction

Green Club Nepal Law Campus was established on 5th June 2023 with the vision of promoting and increasing law students' effective participation in environmental issues. It is formed in the initiation of the B.A.LL.B administration. The members are from all the semesters.

Advocate Rupa Basnet who teaches Environment law at the college has contacted them with Jane Goodall Institute. Since then, we have had one committee. And we are still in the phase of preparing guidelines and structures.
Under this combined club activity, the first-ever university presentation was held.
The presentation was about research on a major issue, "Effectiveness on Food Sovereignty In Nepal”.

What is food sovereignty?

A food system in which those who produce, distribute, and consume food and also have authority over the processes and regulations governing that production and distribution is known as food sovereignty.

Why is it essential?

  • It gives Farmers the right to make judgments. and decisions on their agricultural endeavors.

  • Gives people the right to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods.

  • puts those who produce, distribute, and consume food at the heart of food systems and policies rather than the demands of markets and corporations.

Problems in Nepal

unnamed (1).jpg
  • Farmers are unaware of their right to food sovereignty.

  • They don't even try to assert their rights to the amenities to which they are entitled.

  • Instead of seeing the government subsidies as their rights, they see them as incentives.

  • Farmers are deprived of their rights due to a lack of governmental effort and initiatives to educate the public on their rights, and also due to policy duplication and a conflict of authority between the many levels of government,

Our Appreciation :

  • Nepal Law Campus,  a constituent college under the Faculty of Law, Tribhuvan University.

  • Bhawana Adhikari, the research paper presenter.

  • Upama Dhakal, Roots and Shoots Coordinator as an external attendee.
